Americans with Disabilities Act

Richard Mudrinich is a disabled person. Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man is a disabled super hero.

Today is the 20th anniversary of the enactment of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 is a law that was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1990. It was signed into law on July 26, 1990, by President George H. W. Bush, and later amended with changes effective January 1, 2009.

The Americans with Disabilities Act provides disabled citizens with civil protections that provide equal opportunities in education, communications, transportation and employment. The ADA is a wide-ranging civil rights law that prohibits, under certain circumstances, discrimination based on disability. It affords similar protections against discrimination to Americans with disabilities as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which made discrimination based on race, religion, sex, national origin, and other characteristics illegal. Disability is defined by the ADA as "a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity." The determination of whether any particular condition is considered a disability is made on a case-by-case basis. Certain specific conditions are excluded as disabilities, such as current substance abuse and visual impairment, which is correctable with prescription lenses.

On September 25, 2008, President George W. Bush signed into law the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA). This was intended to give broader protections for disabled workers and "turn back the clock" on court rulings, which Congress deemed too restrictive. The ADAAA includes a list of major life activities.

Richard Mudrinich and his alter-ego Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man advocate for disabled rights. He strives to educate those without disabilities about those with disabilities. He strives to educate those with disabilities about those without disabilities. He strives to educate and entertain individuals, families, and institutions about yard safety to prevent yard accidents and disabilities. He strives to befriend other individuals and animals with disabilities. He strives to promote diversity. Richard Mudrinich is extremely grateful for the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act. It was the first comprehensive declaration of equality for people with disabilities. It is a great day to embrace abilities and disabilities. Thank you.

Birth of Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man

Birth of Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man (Limerick)

By Richard Mudrinich

There once was a man
Who was a grass-cutting fan.
He cut-off his big toe
Screaming oh no!
And hence was born Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man.

Lawnmower Accidents

Most lawn mower accidents occur between April and October, with June being the peak accident month. My accident took place on September 21, 2003. Think before you cut. It hurts! Be Yard Safe!

Buhl Day on Labor Day

Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man celebrates Labor Day! Labor Day is a United States federal holiday that takes place on the first Monday in September. The holiday began in 1882, originating from a desire by the Central Labor Union to create a day off for the "working man". It is still celebrated mainly as a day of rest and marks the symbolic end of summer for many. Labor Day became a federal holiday by Act of Congress in 1894.

Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man works tirelessly to promote yard safety awareness as well as develop and market various innovative yard safety products and services. For instance, Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man is obsessive and compulsive about protecting and saving individuals, families, and institutions from experiencing a yard accident. For instance, Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man is the inventor of yard (garden grass lawn landscaping mowing turf) safety footwear. In addition, Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man is a renaissance yard man who utilizes various art forms to communicate his yard safety awareness message.

Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man celebrates Labor Day with family and friends. I enjoy a family picnic, remembering the many union workers (including my dad who worked as a crane operator for 43 years at Sharon Steel Corporation as well as other relatives and friends). My dad (Robert N. Mudrinich) died due to colorectal cancer in 1995. He was an innovative genius and inventor. In addition, he was a great humanitarian helping anyone who needed assistance. His community contributions included: family resources, legal research, nuts-and-bolts projects, psychological assistance, social work, etc. to help those individuals both more and less fortunate than himself. Likewise, my mom worked in child care for over three decades. She raised children, cherished grandchildren, embraced children of deceased parents, acted as the adopted grandmother for some children, comforted the mentally challenged, cared for the community, etc. She died due to colorectal cancer in 2017.  In the spirit of my dad and mom, Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man strives to innovate yard safety to an unprecedented level with the intention to circle the globe.

Frank Buhl founded the Sharon Steel Corporation and was a partner in United States Steel Corporation. It was this industry that became one of the Shenango Valley’s main sources of income and financial stability for the next hundred years. The Buhls were beloved citizens and philanthropists of the Shenango Valley. Frank’s success in the steel industry provided them with the finances to contribute generously to the Sharon community for many generations to come. Some of their many contributions were the area’s first hospital, the Oakwood Cemetery, the F.H. Buhl Club, the Buhl-Henderson Library, the Julia F. Buhl Girls Club, St. John’s Episcopal Church and the Sharon Country Club. The F. H. Buhl Farm was probably their most generous gift to the local residents. Mr. Buhl purchased three hundred acres of land and then dedicated five years developing it, building roads and planting over 75,000 trees. He built an eleven-acre lake (Lake Julia) with a Casino for public recreation as well as an eighteen-hole golf course. In addition, by the terms of his will, he made necessary arrangements to assure the perpetual maintenance of his projects, thus, Sharon has the only free golf course in America.

Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man strives to make an appearance at Buhl Day located at Buhl Farm in Hermitage, Pennsylvania. If there ever was a family day, well then it must be Buhl Day. Buhl Day dates back to 1915 when industrialist Frank Buhl and his wife, Julia, started the celebration to honor the working men and women in the Shenango Valley. It continued until World War II and then resumed again in 1980. Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man enjoys the nice day of community, family, and fun at Buhl Day.

Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man wants everyone to have a Happy Labor Day! Nonetheless, Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man is always on duty to promote yard safety awareness and rescue people from yard accidents.

Babette

I developed a passion for disabled and challenged persons at a young age. As a child, I had a dog named Babette who developed a condition called "floating kneecaps." In essence, her kneecaps would slip out of place, and she would drag her legs or walk only on her front paws. Furthermore, Babette had a very sweet personality. She loved everyone. Furthermore, I reached out to Babette recognizing some of her physical limitations and admiring her many positive characteristics. Unfortunately, Babette was killed by a car during a visit by one of my relatives who let Babette out to get some fresh-air. I did not learn about this until it was too late. It was a very sad day because Babette embodied a spirit of innocence and love for all animals and people. Babette was a wonderful little doggy.

After my lawn mower accident, I had a series of surgeries to care for the partial amputation of my left foot. Often times, I thought about my little brave doggy Babette who made such a profound impact on everyone who met her. I gained some inspiration and strength from that little doggy.

In the spirit of Babette, I have developed a passion for disabled persons and disabled animals. Actually, I am now a disabled person.  Also, I am very grateful for all the people who have made contributions to address the needs of people with disabilities. Citizen Kane had Rosebud. Rescue Rick the Grass Cut Man had Babette.
